The ECG’s Training Center is the sole training institute for the Company and it is located at Tema Community 10 in the Greater Accra Region. It operates as a division under the Human Resources Directorate. The Training Center is built on a six-acre land space. The Training Center is accredited by National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations(NABPTEX).
The Training Center was constructed between 1972 – 1975 with lecture halls, a workshop and three staff bungalows but without residential facilities for participants of training programs held at the center.Major efforts to upgrade the center began in 1986 through a World Bank aided project. During that short period, some make – shift arrangements were made to some of the lecture rooms to provide boarding facilities for resident craftsmen. Training equipment for the school was acquired during that same period. A team of consultants comprising a Training Manager, a Principal and Craft Instructors were contracted from the Electricity Supply Board of Ireland to provide craft training in over headline, cable jointing and plant maintenance practices. The workshop was then equipped with switchgears and other substation equipment recovered from ECG’s network.
During the 5th Power Project (1990 - 1996), the training school received a major facelift. This included the construction of additional infrastructure development such as a 60 room residential block and a canteen to provide boarding and lodging facilities for both senior and junior staff on various residential courses. During that same period, six Craft Instructors and two Technical Instructors were sent to Dublin for a trainer’s course to build capacity of the staff of the training school.
The center has undergone a lot of transformation over the years and can boast of state of the art training equipment and facilities to carry out its responsibilities. The Training center is mandated to train and develop all technical and non-technical staff of the Company. Currently, all training covering upskilling, special and demand courses, computer end user training, etc are facilitated by the center on behalf of ECG’s Head Office and the Regions.
The training center has evolved to become the beacon for engineering training in the sub-region and provides training for other corporate bodies. Our clients include both local and international institutions namely:
